Former Broome and Spartanburg Methodist College runner Jeremy Vangsnes underwent surgery in a Billings, Mont., hospital Wednesday to relieve swelling and fluid buildup on his brain, Broome cross country coach Skip Frye said.
Vangsnes was hospitalized after he was injured in a car wreck on Interstate 90 on Tuesday.
At 9 p.m. Wednesday, a St. Vincent Hospital spokesperson said Vangsnes was in critical condition.
Frye said doctors were “happy with the results of the surgery” and that a CAT scan revealed some brain activity.
Vangsnes underwent the surgery after his parents arrived in Montana on Wednesday.
Frye said that Vangsnes “coughed and moved” after the surgery.
Frye also said that two of Vangsnes’ brothers, Danny and Ryan, were involved in the wreck and that neither of their injuries were life-threatening.
Vangsnes was a two-time all-state cross country runner and member of the 2005-2006 state championship track team at Broome.
He graduated third in his class in 2006.
Vangsnes became an All-American in the half marathon at SMC, was a three-time academic All-American and set six school records.
He was planning on running this fall at the University of Georgia.
Frye said Vangsnes was in Montana as part of a mission trip with First Baptist Church.
Frye said Vangsnes’ family is originally from North Dakota, and Jeremy was coming back from visiting his family in North Dakota when the wreck happened.
